Nasal congestion or a stuffy nose is a condition that can bring great discomfort especially during nighttime. Thus it is important to know how to get rid of a stuffy nose effectively. In this post I will share some effective stuffy nose remedies, concentrating on natural home remedies for stuffy nose.
Over-the-counter decongestants typically work by narrowing the blood vessels inside the lining of the nose. This reduces the blood flow through the area so that the swollen tissue shrinks, allowing the air pass freely. Decongestants usually clear the nasal passages very quickly, which is why they are very popular remedies for stuffy nose. Continuous use of nasal decongestants like nasal decongestant sprays can however create problems. Very easily you develop a habit using a nasal spray every time you feel that your nose is a little stuffy. And even though over-the-counter nasal decongestants are an effective way to clear your nose, they do not really cure the congestion. Also decongestants contain chemicals that can induce adverse reactions.
My opinion is that best nasal decongestant should be natural, effective, and you should be able to use it as often as you need. One of my favorite stuffy nose remedies is saline drops or saline nasal spray. You can prepare the saline solution yourself and use the drops or spray as often as you like. The downside of using saline solution is that the effect isn’t always a long-lasting one. My other favorite is nasal irrigation by using a Neti Pot. By using Neti Pot regularly you may get rid of nasal congestion for good. For more information how to prepare homemade nasal solution and how to use a Neti Pot, read my post How To Get Rid Of A Stuffy Nose.
A simple natural decongestant for nose is a nasal strip. Nasal strips are typically used to clear nasal passages and to help you get rid of snoring. Using is easy; just clip one strip on the nose. Nasal strips are usually quite effective and work quickly, but provide only temporary short relief.
Sauna therapy, more commonly known as steam inhalation is one of best decongestants. It is also effective way to treat sinus and throat infections and to get relief for other respiratory problems. Start sauna therapy by boiling some water, then pour the water in a bowl and inhale the steam with a towel covering your head. You can boost the effect by applying a few drops of eucalyptus oil or one tablespoon of decongestant ointment in to water.
Sniffing garlic or an onion is one of the simplest home remedies for stuffy nose. It has the same effect as breathing eucalyptus fumes or using a menthol nasal spray. Sniffing garlic or onion irritates the nose providing the relief on stuffy nose.
Another natural decongestant for nose is eating spicy foods. Literally, if your stomach can handle it, go heavy on spice! Results of eating hot and spicy foods are almost immediate. They will make your nose runny and running will remove the irritants causing the stuffy nose.
Apple cide vinegar is commonly used stuffy nose remedy. You can apply few drops of apple cider vinegar into your neti pot solution and perform nasal irrigation. You can also dilute vinegar with water use take it daily as a supplement to get rid of sinus problems and to improve immunity in general.
N-acetyl cysteine, more commonly known as NAC is one of the less known stuffy nose remedies. NAC is a derivative of the amino acid cysteine. It is a precursor for gluthatione, one of the most important antioxidant produced in the body. But what is more interesting NAC is also a mucolytic, meaning it can dissolve mucus. Some doctors report that 1000 mg of NAC three times per day lessens the effects of sinus congestion by working directly on the mucus.
Preparing a mixture of holy basil leaves, lemon juice and ginger juice in equal proportion and eating it with honey twice a day can also help you to get rid of a stuffy nose.
Prepare a mix of garlic, aloe vera juice and honey and dip two cotton balls in it. Place them in your nostrils for some time. This will help you to get rid of a stuffy nose.
Hot shower is yet another simple stuffy nose remedy that usually provides instant relief. Take a hot shower and inhale the warm steam until you start feeling better and your breathing gets easier. In addition to unblocking your nose this remedy will also soothe your nerves and make you calmer. Do not use this remedy if you have fever.
Always remember to drink plenty of water when you are suffering from stuffy nose.
